Seasons #6 - Beauty Blooms in the Garden
Our back garden mid season border is, to my mind, a place of beauty—it is lily season, both lilies and day lilies. They bloom abundantly, and excite the senses of gardeners and non gardeners alike. They are the stars of their own show, making a garden walk a joyous adventure. What a great way to start a day!
When we have our morning coffee on our back porch, this is our view. Isn’t it amazing? We’ve added a lot of yellow to this border. For us, even when it’s a grey day, it brings the sun down to earth.
The first flowers here are a melon color. In addition to buying day lilies for their color and bloom season, we also buy them for the style of their petals. These are curved under as opposed to the yellow ones in the first set of photos, which have sort of ruffled edges. The second two photos are lilies. Some of the day lilies are rebloomers; these lilies only bloom once. But what a show they put on when they bloom!
More lilies, this time the lilies are “pretty in pink”. They are a sturdy plant, as you can see in this photo, and very prolific bloomers. The last two photos are of a new butterfly bush series called the Pugster series. They only grow 2’ tall, making them much more versatile for the average border. The first photo of these bushes, Pugster Amethyst, has very large blooms and the second, Pugster Blue, adds some much needed blue color to the back border. Since this is their first year, I don’t know how they will perform. But so far so good.
Final thought:
“Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come—.” (Song of Songs 2: 12) ”—there will be an abundance of flowers and singing and joy!” (Isaiah 35:1-2) God does, indeed, smile in flowers!
